95th Founders’ Day ‘Nanyang Sing’! - A note from the President of Nanyang Schools Alumni Association, Madam Chua Eng Eng
We celebrated our 95th Founders' Day last year from 15th August to 18th August, with the musical production "Nanyang Sing! " for the 4 nights under the stars. The production and performance involved the contribution and participation of more than 1000 students, teachers, alumni, and parents from our three Nanyang schools.
The musical production was anchored on the founding of Nanyang in 1917 and its history. A unique and challenging production, the school grounds were used as a backdrop. This dramatic production will also be spoken of in the future as part of the illustrious achievement of the three schools and the Alumni Association (NSAA).
The board and the alumni association strongly believe that our school should not be just an institution of learning but a place where dedication, loyalty and passion are developed, roots deepened and bonds strengthened. We wanted people to know of Nanyang’s beginning and be inspired by the charismatic and committed men and women who contributed to Nanyang with their passion and dedication.
When the idea of producing a musical was mooted, the board and the alumni association were excited but hesitant because of the logistics and costs; I can remember many meetings with Madam Wee Bee Hoon, Mrs Lim Lay Ngoh, Madam Lee Siok Tuan and the Alumni Association Committee. Numerous discussions were held regarding the resources and commitments required for this outdoor production, not least the requirement of good weather for the entire 4 nights.
We were extremely elated with the final product, which was a fantastic showcase of talent, musicality and seamless logistics, to unwavering support and thunderous applause from our guests and audience.
By the end of the production, we are happy to see that this musical had strengthened friendships and deepened our bonding to our alma mater. How did we do it? It was the Nanyang spirit of the cast and crew: dedication, tolerance, commitment, endurance, strength, patience and sacrifice!
This celebration was a great success in showcasing the Nanyang story, and more importantly the Nanyang spirit to more than 2400 people in the audience!
May Nanyang have many more 95 glorious years. 南洋永发光!
